Campania

Campania is a region in southern Italy, known for its stunning natural landscapes, rich history, and delicious cuisine. You will recognize these city names in this spectacular region: Naples (the capital of Campania), Salerno, Paestum, Pompeii and Herculaneum. Cities clinging to the Amalfi Coast like Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello, Praiano, Maiori, Minori, and Vietri sul Mare are interconnected by a winding coastal road that offers breathtaking views. And of course the islands are dreamy, like Capri. This is one of the most beautiful and sought-after destinations in Italy with loads of charm, natural beauty and cultural experiences.

Highlights of Campania

Like every region in Italy, there are many highlights in Campania. Here is our short list of places we think you should add to your must-see, do and taste list.

Naples - Home to two faves in all of Italy. The first is fantastic PIZZA. Did you know pizza was invented in Naples? And our second favorite place to visit in Naples is one of the finest archeological museums in the world, called the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. Most of the artifacts and frescoes from Pompeii and Herculaneum are on display in this fantastic museum.

Limoncello - a refreshing liqueur made with sfusato amalfitano lemons, grown in the Amalfi Coast region.

Seafood Dishes with Pasta - For seafood lovers, you will swoon over Campania’s menus.

The Royal Palace of Caserta - About 22 miles north of Naples is one of the most iconic landmarks in Italy, often compared to the Palace of Versailles in France. The Royal Place of Caserta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built in the 18th century and is renowned for its extensive gardens, impressive architecture and opulent interiors.

The town of Sorrento - Sorrento is a vibrant, stunning town with cobblestone streets, clinging to cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and nearby islands of Capri. We suggest you stay at Hotel Cocumella, nearby as they offer stunning views of the sea and a daily shuttle to and from Sorrento.

The island of Capri - Take a ferry to Capri and enjoy the beach and the sea. Simply divine.

The town of Salerno - This town sits on the Amalfi Coast, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea with breathtaking views of the sea. Visit the Salerno Cathedral, the Duomo, with medieval architecture and a crypt containing the remains of Saint Matthew, one of the 12 Disciples of Jesus of Nazareth.

Pompeii and Herculaneum - In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. The eruption preserved much of these two bustling Roman cities, their architecture, infrastructure, art, artifacts, and human remains, providing invaluable insights into daily life in ancient Rome. Both cities have been extensively studied and excavated since the 18th century. Research continues today. Many of the artifacts from both sites have been moved indoors to the Archeological Museum in Naples.

Paestum - If you like Greek Temples, you must see this UNESCO World Heritage Site, 53 miles south of Naples. These are some of the best-preserved examples of ancient Greek architecture in the world dating back to the 6th century B.C.E.

HIKE in Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park - This national park offers a mix of natural beauty, ruins and traditional villages.
